Masquetorno: the challenge of three generations of lathes

We machined the same part on the museum's 100-year-old lathe, on Masquetorno's DIY lathe, and on IMH's Fagor CNC-controlled lathe, to test the similarities and differences between them.

It was at the BIEMH, Advanced and Digital Manufacturing fair, where we met the youtubers Joaquín and Raúl Clavería “Masquetorno”. As a result of the meeting, they visited the Machine Tool Museum to know this great reference of our Basque industrial history, and then we proposed a joint challenge:

What if we made the same piece in three ways, that is, with the old machine in the Museum, the Masquetorno DIY machine, and with the CNC machines used by the students at IMH?

And we did it!

For this purpose we have chosen the spare part for the conventional lathe chucks. These are parts that break due to use, when the students are learning to operate the lathes.

And who have been our protagonists?

  • Danobat lathe with Fagor Automation control and Fagor HMI Elite simulator, from the IMH workshop. Machinists: Students and teachers of the higher cycle of Production Programming in Mechanical Manufacturing. The simulator explanations were given by the technician Endika from Fagor Automation.
  • Orbea lathe from 1925, in the Machine Tool Museum, by Valentín Larrañaga.
  • Do-it-yourself lathe at the MasQueTorno workshop, by Joaquín Clavería.

It has been a great challenge and a great pleasure to have Joaquín, Valentín and Endika with us. We have learned a lot from their experience and know-how. No doubt it will serve to motivate the students of professional training of IMH CIFP and those who follow Masquetorno and the Museum.

And of course, with the CNC simulators, we have also taken a practical look into the future, which is already present in the training of our young talents.
